How to Write a Funny Speech

funny speech topicsWriting a speech on funny speech topics is possibly a lot harder than writing a seriously-minded one. You will need to ensure that the speech is well written, as well as ensuring that your delivery is good and well-timed. Are you up for it? Well, if you think you are, try these steps.

Steps:

  • Choose a funny topic. Ask your spouse, partner, friends, etc., if they agree with you that you have chosen a funny topic. Nothing is less funny than choosing a topic that only tickles your sense of humor but not anybody else’s.
  • Research your topic. If you can’t think of enough witticisms of your own, go online and hunt down other people’s. If you’re at a private function, you won’t need to be too concerned about using other people’s material but if you’re performing in public, be sure to acknowledge other’s or to paraphrase it so that you are not copying. Even comedians get terribly blue about stolen copyright, especially if you deliver it with more aplomb than they do.
  • Keep it current or keep it classic. Humor works best when everyone “gets it”. Don’t choose obscure references or highly elitist examples. Choose something that everyone is bound to know and understand. Naturally, this will depend on the makeup of those listening to your speech; tailor accordingly.
  • Know the difference between funny and bad taste. Bringing someone down a level by mocking a beloved habit is one thing; knocking the stuffing out of them by being sarcastic and demeaning about another person is quite another. Don’t cross that line. If in doubt, leave it out or ask your joke “victim” if they mind what you’ve written about them (especially for wedding speeches).
  • Read your speech out to someone trusted before giving it. If they don’t laugh, this might be a sign to go back to the drawing board (unless they’re someone who never laughs… at anything).

Tips:

  1. Keep it short; humor is at its best in short doses. Unless you’re absolutely brilliant.
  2. Use some cue cards if you think you’ll forget your speech.
